Case Study:
Gene Masuda: Avoiding a Runoff ElectionAvoiding a Runoff Election
Pasadena City Councilmember Gene Masuda faced a trio of opponents in the March 2020 Primary Election. Two of these opponents possessed significant financial and political support. Conventional wisdom declared that Councilmember Masuda likely would be forced into a difficult runoff election – especially after the best funded of his opponents began a harsh negative campaign against the Incumbent.
Christopher Jones Consulting put together a strategic plan to neutralize this negative campaign by highlighting Councilmember Masuda’s deep well of community support. Voter communications (see campaign mailer at right) featured large numbers of local residents condemning “dirty campaigning” and reminding voters of the incumbent’s fundamental decency and record of effective service on behalf of neighborhood organizations.
These resident-focused communications created a voter backlash against the opposition and enabled Councilmember Masuda to win outright re-election in a 4-candidate field with 59% of the vote
